Milestone financing (or tranched financing) splits a committed investment into instalments tied to defined targets — product launch, revenue, user growth or a regulatory approval. Capital is released tranche by tranche as each milestone is met.
It lets investors manage risk by funding against progress rather than all at once, while giving founders a clear roadmap. The risks for founders are missing a milestone narrowly and losing funding, and disputes over whether a milestone was actually achieved — so milestones should be objective and measurable.
