What is the AI Office?
The European AI Office is the European Commission body created to implement and enforce the EU AI Act — most importantly as the exclusive supervisor of general-purpose AI (GPAI) models across the Union. National authorities police most AI systems; the AI Office polices the model layer.
What it actually does
It drafts and administers the GPAI codes of practice, receives model documentation, designates models with systemic risk, can compel information, order model evaluations and demand corrective measures. It also coordinates the AI Board (member-state representatives) and supports national regulators on cross-border cases.
Why a Turkish startup should care
If you build on top of a foundation model, your provider’s obligations to the AI Office (training-content summaries, model documentation) shape what you can pass through to your own customers and what your vendor contract must promise. If you fine-tune a model substantially, you may inherit provider duties yourself — and the AI Office is the regulator watching that boundary.
AI Office vs. national supervisory authorities?
The AI Office supervises GPAI models and coordinates; member-state authorities enforce the Act against AI systems in their markets. One product can face both layers.
