What is “stealth mode”?

Stealth mode is the practice of building a company in deliberate public silence — no website beyond a holding page, no press, no public team page, no LinkedIn posts about the product. Founders enter stealth to protect competitive advantage during early development, signal exclusivity to recruits and investors, or simply because the product is not yet ready for criticism. The practice is widely debated and increasingly rare for SaaS.

Why founders go stealth

  • Competitive secrecy: idea is fragile and incumbents might copy faster than the team can ship.
  • Brand control: founders want to launch with polish, not in beta.
  • Recruiting leverage: stealth status creates intrigue around the company.
  • Regulatory caution: in financial services, healthcare or defence, premature publicity creates compliance risk.
  • Founder preference: heads-down builders simply prefer not to talk publicly until shipping.

Why most founders should not go stealth

  • Ideas are cheap, execution is hard: the competitive secrecy argument over-weights the value of the idea itself.
  • Lost customer feedback: stealth means not talking to customers about the product. Customer development requires going public with at least some of the message.
  • Lost recruiting and partnership: the best hires and partners come from inbound interest, which stealth blocks.
  • Lost investor signal: visible traction matters in fundraising; stealth erases it.

“Soft stealth” vs. true stealth

Most useful stealth is partial — building publicly with the team and investors known, while keeping product details quiet until launch. True stealth (everything hidden) is appropriate only for genuinely sensitive contexts: regulated industries, large-incumbent threat, or product mechanics that depend on launch surprise.
